Texas Longhorn Cattle, Bull (Farm World by Schleich)

5 (7 votes)

An icon of the American west, the Texas longhorn traces its origins to cattle brought to the Americas from the Iberian Peninsula by Spanish conquistadors. In Texas, some of these criollo cattle went feral and over several generations adapted to the harsh dry climate of the American southwest. When American settlers spread westward, they brought European cattle breeds that, by themselves, failed to thrive, but when crossed with the criollo cattle did exceptionally well.

Alligator Gar, juvenile (3″ figure by Replica Toy Fish)

4.9 (9 votes)

Back with the very last August 2015 releases from Replica Toy Fish, the second of two figures that use the same model, this time the juvenile alligator gar, Atractosteus spathula, seen originally as a six inch figure. Last time I focused on the adult figure, now we can take a more pictorial look at the juvenile version.

Angus Cattle, Cow (Safari Farm by Safari Ltd.)

5 (4 votes)

Angus cattle are a breed of beef cattle regarded as having some of the highest quality beef available. If you’ve ever perused the beef aisles at the supermarket you’ve no doubt noticed that when a cut of beef comes from Angus cattle, it is marketed as such. It is one of the few types of beef where the breed it comes from is acknowledged and used to advertise the product.

The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is one of the most widespread, common, and familiar birds. Native to the Palearctic, it now occurs nearly worldwide through human introduction. A highly adaptable species, it can be found in fields, open scrubland, farms, and urban and suburban settings, including parks, gardens, cemeteries, campuses, fairgrounds, and even around bustling metropolises.

Alligator Gar, adult (3″ figure by Replica Toy Fish)

4.6 (8 votes)

Here we are, working toward the last August 2015 releases from Replica Toy Fish, which is technically a pair of figures that use the same model but different colours. And more specifically, three inch figures that represent a species already seen as a six inch figure. That’s right, more figures of the the alligator gar, Atractosteus spathula.

Giant Panda, 2014 (Wild Safari Wildlife by Safari Ltd.)

5 (4 votes)

Everyone’s favorite herbivorous carnivoran, the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is also the most herbivorous species of carnivoran, with over 60 species of bamboo making up over 99% of its diet. The giant panda lives across six mountain ranges located in China, a sliver of its former range which once extended into southwest China, Myanmar, and north Vietnam.

Shovelnose Sturgeon (6 Inch Series by Replica Toy Fish)

4.6 (7 votes)

This figure is the sixth and final figure from the Replica Toy Fish 6 inch series, and possibly the most unique model of the whole company’s run. The figure is the shovelnose sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorhynchus, by no means the first sturgeon on the blog, but the first not from the genus Acipenser (previously including lake sturgeon and Chinese sturgeon) and…probably the only figure from the genus so far (there are other Acipenser figures…and someday we might get to Huso, but I digress).

Type D Killer Whale (Wild Safari Sealife by Safari Ltd.)

Review and images by Suspsy; edited by bmathison1972

Practically everyone has heard of the killer whale or orca (Orcinus orca), but probably not about the many different types that known to roam the world’s oceans. Perhaps the most mysterious of all them is the Type D killer whale, which inhabits sub-Antarctic waters between latitudes 40 degrees South and 60 degrees South.

Alligator Gar (6 Inch Series by Replica Toy Fish)

Back with another Replica Toy Fish figure, another from the original (and only) six-inch figure collection. I won’t lie, of the 6 this was one of the two I was most excited for. At the time I think it was the only model of the species…or maybe even the whole family (the collection is a bit of a blur sometimes).

Red-eared Slider (Wild Animals by Papo)

5 (13 votes)

In 1992 the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were at the height of their popularity and like many young boys of my generation, I was obsessed! To the point where my vast toy collection wasn’t enough. I wanted a real turtle, and shockingly enough my mother obliged me. He was a red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans), a sub-species of the pond slider native to the mid-western United States, around the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

Guadalupe Bass (3″ Figure by Replica Toy Fish)

4.9 (19 votes)

In August 2015 another wave of figures was released by Replica Toy Fish. Once again, no real announcement or launch, I think I found out because of a photo on the STS collector site or something. Maybe I found out about a different figure, and this one was there too. Seems like something that would be important for a company to make sales…anyway, it was just a few more species, but again, pretty popular models.

South Island Takahē (Wildlife by CollectA)

5 (7 votes)

The takahē are, well were, two species of flightless swamphens endemic to New Zealand. The North Island takahē (Porphyrio mantelli) became extinct shortly after the Maori settlement of New Zealand in the early 1300s. The South Island takahē (P. hochstetteri) is still alive, but just barely.
