Common Otter (Wildlife by CollectA)

Otters belong to the mustelid family, which also includes weasels and their kin, badgers, skunks, and wolverines. There are currently 13 extant species of otter that all range from semiaquatic to marine in their lifestyles. The Eurasian or common otter (Lutra lutra) is probably the most familiar member of the lot, with a range throughout Europe, much of Asia, and parts of Africa and the Middle East.

Leopard Seal (Sealife by CollectA)

We usually picture seals as these cute bumbling blobs that are clumsy and slow on land and behave like puppy dogs. Make no mistake: once they get into the water, they transform into fast moving predators preying on fish and invertebrates like cephalopods and crustaceans.

Fennec Fox (Wild life Africa by Schleich)

Back to the “Savanah Summer”, and heading to north Africa to see one of the carnivores of Africa. While most will think of the big cats when it comes to carnivorans in Africa, be it Lions and Cheetahs and Leopards, oh my (I know, it’s not as catchy, but roll with it!) but the dogs have their teeth in that part of the world.

Leopard Seal (Wild Safari Sealife by Safari Ltd.)

The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is the antithesis of what we think of when we think of most pinnipeds: seals, sealions, and walruses. The only member of its genus, the leopard seal is about as far from a chubby harbor seal, or playful California sea lion, as you can get.

Welcome back to the “Savannah Summer”! Hot weather often makes people want to find a nice, shady spot and just relax, do more later as the temperature dips. This method is also used by the largest mammal predator in Africa, the lion (Panthera leo). Like any cat, they are masters of lazing around, as well as hunting.

Maned Wolf (Wild Safari Wildlife by Safari Ltd.)

The Safari Ltd. maned wolf, listed as #100367, was released in 2021 and is currently in production. This model is included as part of the Wild Safari Wildlife Collection. The model itself measures to around 4 inches long and 3.5 inches tall (10.16 cm x 8.89 cm).

When most think of big cats, they probably picture these powerful carnivores majestically tracking their prey in the undergrowth, or roaring to ward off other predators. At the end of the day though, they are still cats, and there is one thing that makes them very good at: sleeping. The mighty tiger (Panthera tigris) is no exception, happy to lounge around when not hunting.

Spotted Hyena (Wild Safari Wildlife by Safari Ltd.)

Spotted or laughing hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) are masterful hunters of the African savannah that kill up to 95% of their food as opposed to scavenging it. They have the largest group sizes and the most complex social behaviour of any member of the order Carnivora.

Harbor Seal (Wild Life Arctic & Antarctic by Schleich)

3 (1 votes)
Of all the pinnipeds, none embody ubiquity quite like the harbor seal (Phoca vitulina). This species is also known as the common seal as it’s the most widely distributed species of any seal, sea lion, or walrus. They are found all along the marine coastlines of the Northern hemisphere.

Japanese Animals (Colorata)

Well, here we are. I’ve reached a big milestone, my 50th review! I want to thank everyone who read, rated and commented on my reviews to this point. I also want to thank bmathison1972 for editing my work. For this milestone, I wanted to cover something well made and on the more expensive side, so I chose the Japanese Animals set by Colorata.

Hawaiian Monk Seal (AZA Collection by K&M International)

Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi) are the subject of several myths that put it in danger. It is sometimes thought that they are an invasive species not indigenous to Hawaii, but brought there by humans in very recent history.

Tyger, Tyger, burning bright,

In the forest of the night,

What immortal hand or eye

Can frame thy fearful symmetry?” The Tyger, William Blake, 1794

This poem, used in the Songs of Experience by William Blake, was a counterpoint of the Songs of Innocence poem, The Lamb, and you can see why.

When it comes to cats on the African savanna, those that comes to mind to most people are the lions, leopards, and cheetahs. There are other cats that people don’t think off, like the caracal or the subject of this review, the serval (Leptailurus serval).

Sea Otter, pair (Monterey Bay Aquarium by Safari Ltd.)

3.5 (4 votes)
Today’s item will mark the blog’s first post on otters, as we’re covering the sea otter (Enhydra lutris). Sea otters are part of the Lutrinae subfamily of mustelids that includes all of the genera of otters. Three subspecies are recognized between the Asian sea otter in Russia and northern Japan, the northern sea otter in Alaska, and the southern sea otter in California.

Polar Bear, cub (Wild Life by Schleich)

4.8 (4 votes)

So, here we are, the final review of my “Winter Wonderland” series, and we conclude with perhaps the greatest of mammals to walk the ice and snow of the world: the polar bear (Ursus maritimus). These hypercarnivourous bears roam the Arctic circle, hunting prey on the snowy tundra, the largest of the bears.
