The trotting Safari Ltd. Wild Safari Wildlife 228929 black or hook-lipped rhinoceros, Diceros bicornis (Linnaeus, 1758). Snout-vent length is approx. 121 mm and shoulder height 65 mm, so the scale is between approx. 1:21 and 1:27. The human figure (man from Safari Ltd People in Motion TOOB) is approx. 1:23 – 1:27 scale. The black rhinoceros is on the brink of extinction and has been severely decimated by poaching and habitat loss and three of its subspecies are already extinct. The total population has slightly recovered and was estimated to be 4,880 individuals at the end of 2010 (see attached link to IUCN website) but the species still qualifies being categorised “Critically Endangered” by IUCN.

I’ve added a comparison shot with the bulkier WS Wildlife White Rhino, Ceratotherium simum, which is in similar scale (approx. 1:23 – 1:28). Together, these figures perfectly demonstrate the differences between the two African rhino species, the larger and heavier White Rhino with its huge, wide-mouthed head that is usually held quite low and the more gracile Black Rhino with a smaller, hook-lipped head that is usually held more upright.
