A male strepsipteran, so much is sure. But which? Stylopidae seem to have different antennae. LOL, now you got me browsing for an online key... found one! And I'd say (cautiously) possibly family Corioxenidae. But I cannot identify it any further.

that's as far as I know what it is too (according to the photographer, Mike Quinn, who graciously let me use his image).

So, that's good enough to keep the game going.

P.S...when is someone going to make a toy/replica strepsipteran?????

And life size, please! ;D Well, I have doubts even Kaiyodo will make one anytime soon. :-\

Okay, next critter to guess. Just because next week on monday we will torture our biology students with molluscs...

Photo was taken by myself, it's a European species.

The small shell makes me think it's one of the semi-slugs. Doing searches for European semi-slugs, the best I can come up with is Daudebardia rufa.

That's exactly what it is, Daudebardia rufa! :D

here we are:

I was almost guessing Ascaris lumbricoides but then I noticed the knob-like proboscis at the anterior end. So that's an acanthocephalan and I guess it's Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus. Funny, I found photos on wikipedia which possibly show the same specimen and the image file ends with BAM1 - so did you also upload the corresponding photo to wikipedia? :)

the internet is taking the challenge out of this game :). The image was originally taken for the DPDx website (which is of public domain), and was then subsequently used for Wiki. If I knew it was on wiki, I wouldn't of used it here. Uggh. LOL.

On the other hand without identifying that the photo shows an acanthocephalan first, browsing wikipedia for an exact match would have most certainly been futile. Sometimes I thought the most challenging thing about this game is to find a suitable critter to guess, not that hard that only specialists can guess it but also not too easy - I have the feeling most of the ones I posted were all solved within minutes or so. :-[

Well, so here comes the next one...

Sorry, it's not Ovalipes. Some specimens have this white patch and some don't.

I was hoping Hercules Beetle would post a new one since it would have been his turn - he solved the last one... :-\ I hope he is okay with someone else posting a new one?
Assuming he is... well, usually I'd say salps are difficult but at that enormous size it can only be Thetys vagina!

stargatedalek

you are correct! :)

if Hercules Beetle comes back I say we give him a turn right off the bat, for now congrats its your turn
