We just completed a Buying Guide for the Octopus figures that we have in stock.  While our high level reviews only offer basic information to help the casual buyer make better choices, I thought you all would be interested in the comparison pictures that we include which each review. Those comparison pictures might help you make better comparisons.  I will post additional links as new Guides get completed.

Here is the link to the Octopus Guide

I attached the comparison images to this post for your convenience however.

Feedback is always appreciated.

This is pretty cool! Thanks for sharing. I don't have an octopus in my collection yet so this is sure to be useful.

Hey BlueKrono - What is your suggestion on the Mojo Blue Groper?

FYI, We are in the process of updating all of our product pages with better actual data.  (Which turns out to be a much more time consuming task than expected).  We are going thru item by item to update the information (and the pictures). Because you mentioned the Mojo Blue Groper, I went ahead and updated the information on that page. https://www.happyhentoys.com/mojo-387356-blue-groper.html  Overall it is a good figure (especially for MOJO) and as the only Blue Groper that currently know of on the market, that makes it even better LOL.  Did not have a chance to update the pictures, but it is in the queue for better pictures.  Let me know if you had additional information on the Mojo BG.  Thanks for your feedback!

I think what he is probably eluding to is that the Mojo blue groper is misnamed by the company. It actually appears to represent a humphead wrasse. This is a figure I've been meaning to review for the blog for awhile now.

HappyHen

I went to the official Mojo price list and that figure is now listed as a "Blue Grouper" on the price list.  I then went to the Wikipedia page for Blue Groper and the first line is:
"Achoerodus is a genus of wrasses collectively known as blue gropers" so there appears to be overlap between the Groper and Wrasses.  I will defer to the experts such as you but if Mojo calls it a Blue Groper, we will continue to call it that but update the description to point out any issues.

This is a very old and extremely discussed topic very well known by most Animal Toy Forum and STS forum members. There are somewhere long discussions about the grouper-groper dilema. The estabilished conclusion from long years ago is that the name Blue Groper is the correct one for this figure. I don't know why Mojo changed it to Blue Grouper on the price list given the fact the figure represents a blue groper and NOT a blue grouper.

I'd heard of groupers before, but I didn't know gropers were an icthyologically correct turn. It seems the ichthyologists have taken the "Naughty Naming" crown away from the ornithologists.

Blue gropers are wrasses (family Labridae). And by blue groper I mean Achoerodus gouldii (western blue groper) and A. viridis (eastern blue groper). The figure is not a blue groper.

According to Fishbase the only species ever referred to as a blue GROUPER is the comet grouper (Epinephelus morrhua). Grouper is a common name belonging to various species in the the subfamily Epinephelinae. The figure is not a grouper.

The fish that the figure actually represents is a humphead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) which, like the blue groper, is a member of the wrasse family (Labridae).

Mojo used to call the figure a blue groper, which was wrong. But calling it a blue grouper is also wrong. However, a distributor that sells the figure (like Happy Hen Toys) should probably call it what it is marketed as, even if it's wrong.

I held off on getting this Mojo figure for such a long time and I was a bit confused by the listing of "Blue Groper" (not just at HappyHenToys but others too)

I suggest putting "Humphead Wrasse" in parentheses and quotation marks  behind the listing title or at least make note of it in the beginning of the description.

@HappyHen - it might be good to indicate when such comparisons represent different species. For example:
Safari Ltd. is a Hoffman's two-toed sloth
Mojo Fun is a Linnaeus' two-toed sloth
Papo, Schleich, and CollectA are brown-throated three-toed sloths

these identifications above were indicated by the companies (well, Safari and Mojo were).

You indicate the Safari figure is the least popular (I assume this is based on sales?). Maybe more people would buy it if they new it represented a different species than the others. Also, the claws on the Safari model are correct, they just are not well-demarcated on the hands (the feet have three claws - check the black nails  C:-) )

EpicRaptorMan

I had both Safari Ltd and Mojo's two toed sloths and based on size alone I prefer Mojo's.

The Safari Ltd's went into a box that I will one day put up for sale.
