Common Zebra, foal (Baby Wildlife by Toymany)

Before I start this review I must once again thank @Kenc and our friends at Toymany for donating this review sample. This is the fifth in a series of six baby African animals I will be reviewing as part of Toymany’s 2024 Baby Wildlife collection.

Baby zebras are remarkable creatures. They can stand, walk, and run almost immediately after birth! This is very important because the savanna woodlands and grasslands they inhabit are full of predators, including lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and African wild dogs. A baby zebra will start eating grasses about a week after being born and will continue to nurse for up to a year. Females only give birth to a single foal once a year. Today we will be looking at a baby zebra by Toymany. They did not specify what kind of zebra, but the striping pattern suggests a plains zebra, specifically Grant’s zebra (Equus quaggi boehmi).

The figure stands about 4.5 cm at the shoulder. Without knowing a precise age, it is hard to calculate an exact scale. It appears to be grazing, so it’s not a newborn. It seems to scale well with CollectA’s 2018 adult common zebra, which stands 6.7 cm at the shoulder for a scale of 1:18-1:21.

As previously mentioned, this zebra foal is sculpted with its head down, as if it was grazing or maybe taking a drink from a water hole. I like how each of the African animal babies I have reviewed so far are each in different poses. They are not all just standing in a static, neutral position. And I love that it stands well on relatively slender legs (as they should be). In-hand there is a very slight texture, so it’s not glossy or semi-glossy, and the mane is more heavily textured.

As with nearly all zebra toys, its base color is white with black striping (a much more true white compared with the off-white of the CollectA adult). There are darker infuscations along the mane, just above the hooves, and around the muzzle. The eyes and hooves are black.

Like with many common and familiar species, there is no shortage of baby zebras on the market. However, this exceptional little fellow is sure to compliment any herd or collection nicely. Better watch out, little fella…
