I do not know why it took me so long to get the charismatic little Schleich warthogs. So here are the Schleich Wild Life common warthogs, Phacochoerus africanus (Gmelin, 1788). Item numbers are 14611 (boar) and 14613 (sow). The piglet has been featured in another blogpost by animaltoyforum and has the item number 14612. Snout-vent lengths are 89 (boar) and 82 mm (sow) and shoulder heights are 46.5, and 43 mm, respectively, so the scale is approx. 1:14 to 1:17 (the human figure is the South American Father by Miniland Los Amigos del Mundo and is approx. 1:13 – 1:14 scale). All three figures (boar, sow, and piglet) have been retired but may still be available at numerous stores. Widely distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa and generally common, IUCN lists the common warthog as “Least Concern”. A less known fact is that there are actually two extant species of warthogs, the common warthog and the similar desert warthog, P. aethiopicus (they were formerly usually both regarded as P. aethiopicus) which is restricted to South Eastern Ethiopia, North Eastern Kenya, and Somalia. This species can be distinguished from the common warthog by its ear tips being curled backwards, a prominent swelling below the eye and hooked genal warts (the larger pair of warts just below the eyes), and a mane that is usually light in colour. The Schleich figures are all closer in appearance to the common warthog. While I’m not always overly enthusiastic about Schleich, these three were instant favourites of mine once I saw them in person in a shop and so I had to get them before they’re gone for good.

Wonderful, especially as it comes as a whole family, I love when such is available. Just unfortunate, that it is discontinued.
