Roan Antelope, Pair (Noah’s Pals by Caboodle! Toys LLC)

Though a wastebasket taxon, antelopes are still an endearing group, filled with many similar yet diverse species. There are several large members of this group, and this review will show one in the top 5 of these, the Roan Antelope (Hippotragus equinus). Found in Southern, Western and Central Africa, they are only smaller than the eland, male Kudu and Bongo, showing them as sizeable creatures. Living amongst the grasslands and woodlands of the Savanah, there many of their herds across the continent. As of this review, only one company have immortalised them in plastic, that being Noah’s Pals. Let’s see how they did!

We start with the male, Aidan. The pelt goes for a tan brown, which does work well for it, and matches the real animal well, if a little drab in comparison to it’s living kin. The pose is it walking forward and looking around, showing off it amazing antlers and magnificent ears. The sculpting is fantastic here, really giving it an authentic look. It is, like all the others in the line, 1:24 scale, measuring 3.3″ long and 4″ high, pretty good. The legs are quite close together, so it may struggle to stand as a result of warping.

Next we have Autumn, the female of the pair. She seems very cautious, stock still, looking out to see what is happening. She seems a lot more grey than Aidan, which is not wrong, but would have been nice to use some of the Roan’s brighter colours. She is once again well sculpted (with great ears!) and of a decent size, measuring 3.6″ high and 3.4″ long.

There is, as I said previously, only these models to represent the species, but I do see it as a great choice, especially as you get the full sexual dimorphism of the species. This is part of Noah’s Pals “Common” line, meaning there are an unlimited number of them, and they are reasonably common on eBay, if you know where to search. I do say it’s worthwhile.

  • Nice! This is one of three NP pairs I have, in addition to the kinkajous (already reviewed on the Blog), and giant muntjac (which are technically enroute to me still)

    • To be fair, looking to get the muntjac too. This set is definitely worth it. You thinking of reviewing the muntjac when it arrives? Happy to have more people reviewing the line.
