So, here we are, the final review of my “Winter Wonderland” series, and we conclude with perhaps the greatest of mammals to walk the ice and snow of the world: the polar bear (Ursus maritimus). These hypercarnivourous bears roam the Arctic circle, hunting prey on the snowy tundra, the largest of the bears. Sadly, due to global warming, these bears are losing the ice they require to hunt and live on, and they are now endangered. Here, we see a juvenile of the species, courtesy of Schleich.
This is very clearly a cub, as can be seen from the smaller, less developed snout, large paws for it’s size and being quite small. The sculpt is beautiful, very well done fur here, unmistakably a polar bear, with the white colour of the fur popping brilliantly.
The pose is somewhat playful, looking around, shuffling snow with it’s paws, it’s quite nice. As a cub, it is small, meant to fit with adults of the line. It measures 1.8″ high and 2.5″ long, so not gonna take up to much space in a play box or collector shelf.
Polar bears, cubs and adults alike, are well produced by toy companies, so if one is gonna stand out from the rest, it has to be of good quality and, in my opinion, this one is. It was retired back in 2012, so eBay may be your best to grab this little cutie, and I do recommend it if you are looking for a cub to accompany an adult. And with that, my “Winter Wonderland” comes to a close. I hope you’ve enjoyed this little mini-series into the lands of ice and snow. Will there be a follow-up? Stay tuned for more……..
