The evolution and adaptation of one group can result in a burst of adaptation in other, completely different ones. Take the adaptation of eusocial insects, forming colonies, hives and the like. This is a largely Cenozoic adaptation, not well documented before the extinction of the dinosaurs. Forming together can help, but it can be the opportunity for a feeding frenzy for another. None are quite so well adapted to hunting these insects as the Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), which, with it’s huge claws and long tongue, has evolved brilliantly to devour hundreds of ants in any nest, no matter how well made or defended. It’s distinctive morphology means it is no stranger to toy lines, and here, we see a recent example, curtesy of Schleich.
Schleich perfectly captures this bizarre beast in all it’s glory, from it’s long snout to it’s big bushy tail, which manages to avoid looking like one big mass of plastic, getting the bushy look spot on. My only gripe are the front paws, with it’s characteristic huge claws being a little too flat for my liking. The colouration and patterns are perfect however, no complaints on that.
The pose is great, as if sniffing out a meal of ants and termites with it’s fantastic snout, really suits it. As per the giant name, this is a good sized figure, measuring 5.2″ long and 2″ high. As Giant anteaters can reach up to 7 ft 1″ in length, I feel this can work with other lines well.
This is an amazing model, with only one real blemish. The sculpting and painting are brilliant, and I’d say this is worth picking up. As it is a 2021 model, it’s quite easy to find, either online or in store, and I feel this is worth being in the toy box or on the collector shelf. See it, grab it!
