The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the largest species of penguin in the world and also nearly everyone’s favorite. This small emperor penguin plush by Douglas Cuddle Toys has become my new favorite animal. Penguins are popular. Late 90s and early 2000s kids may remember Pingu the Penguin from PBS, and later in 2005 came the penguins from Madagascar–who can forget Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private?

This penguin plush is tiny but it is extremely loveable and quite realistic too. I decided not to keep the name given by the manufacturer because I thought it was too silly for such a beautiful, sweet bird. So instead I named her Mavis, which is how I will refer to her for the remainder of the review.

Mavis is about eight inches tall and about five inches across at her widest points.

I enjoy the detail on her beak, which is black on top and bright orange-red on the bottom. She has two patches of yellow and white on the sides of her face, and plain black button eyes. Her feet are black, and her little wings are black on top and white on the bottom.

The plush on her back is short and shiny like the shine of a real emperor penguin’s back. Her wings can be moved up or down and maybe even posed a little. The belly and bottom section are white. Her head is also positioned so it looks like Mavis is looking slightly to her side at something, which I also think is very cute. She seems to have a small sack of beans in her bottom section which culminates in a suggestion of a little pointed tail in her back end. The rest of her is filled with very soft poly-fil.

For accuracy I think she deserves five stars. Opinions may be mixed on her size but I find the small size very convenient and helpful. Softness is a four out of five, and her expression is very lovable. She is available at Amazon.
