Mud Crab (AAA)

Scuttling along shorelines, rummaging in the surf or sand, crustaceans are well known beach living animals, especially the crab. With their pincers, shells and multiple legs, they are well known critters, and have many figures made of them. Here, we see one of many examples made by AAA.

As usual, discerning a species is incredibly tricky, as this is just labelled “crab”. It can be narrowed down to a swimmer crab owing to the flattened, paddle like fifth set of limbs. If I were to hazard a guess to it’s species, owing to it’s colouration and shell shape, I would guess it was the mud crab Scylla serrata, a mud crab from across the tropics, though I leave this up to debate.

The pose is fairly neutral, likely based on the specimen used to make it. It is a very well made and sculpted model, all the details there. The colouration of green and yellow works well, even if it makes identification hard. It is a reasonably large model, measuring 5.8″ wide and 3.8″ long, so will be a bit of room on a shelf. There is a little flex to the pincers and legs, though I wouldn’t mess these around too much, as the plastic likely would break eventually.

This is a well made figure, and one I am quite happy to have in my collection. There is a great charm to it, it’s eye catching in it’s own way. I really like it, with it’s great sculpt work that can still stand up to modern models. It is long discontinued, so eBay will be your best bet, but I do recommend picking it up if you see it. It’s doesn’t disappoint.

“Umm, could you let me out please?”
