Robust Cicada (Insects of Japan Vol. 1 by Yujin)

The Minmin Cicada (Hyalessa maculaticollis) is a cicada that owes it’s name to it’s cry which goes like “min—minminminminmi…” it is well known in Japan. This is a review on the figurines Yujin made of this species.

Rosy Bitterling (Freshwater Fish Pictorial Book, Series 1, revised release by Yujin)

This figure is the Rosy Bitterling or Baratanago, Rodeus ocellatus, number 09 from the first series (the Yujin paper refers to it as the subspecies R.o. ocellatus but it appears all subspecies may have been collapsed together—there is some discrepancy there). The Rosy bitterling is a cyprinid (carps & minnows) found in two populations, in Japan and mainland China and Taiwan.

Roughskin Sculpin (Freshwater Fishes Book 2, first AND second release by Yujin)

This figure is the Roughskin Sculpin (for reasons that are unclear, the Japanese name Yamanokami apparently translates to “God of the Mountain!”), Trachidermus fasciatus, sculpt number 27 and number 12 from the second series. This is the first and only sculpin (Cottidae) in the Yujin series.

Round-Tail Paradise Fish (Freshwater Fish Pictorial Book 1, original release, by Yujin)

The original post: This figure is the Paradise Fish (or Paradise Gourami), Macropodus chinensis (but see note below), number 10 from the first series. This is the first and only anabantid figure in the set. The Paradise Fish is a generalist species that is found, like many of the fish in the series, in waterways throughout eastern Asia from Korea to Vietnam.

There are roughly 34,000 species of fish inhabiting the World’s oceans, seas, ponds, rivers, and lakes in the present, but many more species have already gone extinct or have yet to be discovered. In recent years, many figure companies have had their fair share of fish figures, although are usually outclassed by the more popular mammals.

Continuing on the review of Yujin’s Saltwater Fish Part 1, here’s a look at the second half of the set.

Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish (Forcipiger flavissimus)

Size of figure: 4.8 cm

Size: 22 cm

Scale: 1:4

Color: yellow body with half black on top and white on the lower half of the head, transparent pectoral and caudal fin, pale blue on the end of dorsal and anal fin, and black eye spot on the either side of the anal fin

Diet: hard and soft coral polyps and small crustaceans

Species frequency in being made into toy form: rare

Base: sand with rock

Notes: a butterflyfish with a typical butterflyfish shape; not the most exciting butterflyfish for Yujin to go with but the reason why they went with this species might be because of the butterfly fish character in Finding Nemo is a yellow longnose butterflyfish.

To close off my Yujin Saltwater Fish in Colour Part 1 reviews (see the first parts here and here), I am hereby reviewing the last 3 of the fish; they’re all the secret and chase pieces. Instead of going by numerical numbers, I’ll start from the weakest to the best (in my opinion).

Three-spined Stickleback (Freshwater Fish Pictorial Book 1, revised release, by Yujin)

This figure is the Three-spined Stickleback (or Tiddler, or Tiddlebat, in Great Britain, because that’s kind of hilarious), Gasterosteus aculeatus, number 12 from the first series. This is the only representative of the stickleback order in the set; phylogenetically, they are grouped with more familiar spiny fish like scorpionfish, sea-robins and wolffish (at one time they were grouped with seahorses, pipefish and kin in Sygnathiformes, but that is no longer considered correct).

White-spotted Char (Freshwater Fish Pictorial Book, Series 1, revised by Yujin)

This figure is the White-spotted Char (also known as iwana in Japan), Salvelinus leucomaensis, number 02 from the first series. This salmon and trout relative is a fish found in East Asia, and can be landlocked or ocean-running. As with many Japanese fish models (though not all) it is widely fished for.

Willow Shiner (Freshwater Fishes Book 2, first AND second release by Yujin)

This figure is the Willow Shiner (or in Japan, Honmoroko), Gnathopogon caerulescens, model 18 and number 3 in the second series. At the original time of writing, this was one of two species out of the whole series that I didn’t have. Then I was able to get both versions at once…
