Today I want you to introduce to a really nasty looking fish, the Atlantic wolffish (Anarhichas lupus) or seawolf. Few people know this fish, although a lot have probably eaten it as part of those fish dishes that do not specify a certain species of fish, as the famous “fish and chips” on the British Islands for example. As a result, the seawolf’s populations have greatly suffered from overfishing, although to this date no official conservation status has been declared.

The Atlantic wolffish by Yowie Group is the only figure of this species known to me and was released in their Wild Waters Series in 2019. It measures 9 cm along its spine and perches 2.3 cm high. Yowie figures come in surprise eggs in the form of the Yowie mascot figures. They are not available in Germany; we got all our figures during one of our trips through Australia and were surprised by the fairly high quality of the figures in regards to their accuracy.

Basically, this figure is as good as you could ask for a small toy figure. Kaiyodo released a figure of another species of wolffish, but its a bottlecap figure and serves rather as collectible than as a toy. The boxy head with the brutal dentition is well replicated. While the looks and the name of the Atlantic wolffish may lead you to think it is a dangerous hunter, the ground dwelling seawolf lives a rather hidden life and feeds on hard shelled mollusks, starfish, crustaceans and the like.

The eyes may be a bit on the large side, but you could argue it`s a young specimen. The body is fittingly long and all the fins rightly placed and correct in their proportions. Made from a blueish grey plastic the fins are painted blue. This is simple but serves its purpose, some vertical stripes would have been great, but as it is it fits within the variance of the species compared by a Google image search.

Yowie did a great job in depicting this unusual species and make it into a great and durable toy. For its use in water it may be noted, that the figure is not buoyant. That, however, makes it easy to have the figure there in the body of water, where it should be. Highly recommended if you look to add some plastic life to your cold water riff.
