-Seven Mexican Wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) puppies were born at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago on April 27th.

-It is a subspecies of gray wolf native to Southeastern Arizona and Southern New Mexico in the United States and Northern Mexico. It is the smallest of North America gray wolves and is distinguished by its smaller, narrower skull and its darker pelt.

-The birth of these seven puppies is a cause for celebration, as the Mexican wolf has been on the endangered list since 1976. Their population was once around 4,000 but in 2022, the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service said there were only 241 documented in the wild.

- The U.S Fish and Wildlife Services' Mexican Wolf Recovery Program has placed the pups in wild Mexican wolf dens in hope of strengthening the population.

That is splendid news! I have enjoyed following the efforts to restore this species. The fostering method (taking captive bred pups and placing them in wild living litters) has been very successful so far. It gives one hope for the future where there often isn't much.
