FigureFocus 317 Acheson Primeval Designs Spotted Hyena

Time to look at yet another Hyena figure from the collection! Yeah...I have many. It's a thing! This time it's a small clan of metal Spotted Hyenas from Acheson Creations' Primeval Designs series. As with a few other figures from the series that I've looked at before, these are the metal (pewter) figures, being smaller models, although some are resin as well. Unlike other figures seen on the blog, these figures are not technically part of the 'prehistoric' series, but…

FigureFocus 314 Play Visions Striped Hyena

Here's one of those figures that I was very excited to get when they first came out, and I still have a lot of them from those days! I am speaking of the Play Visions Striped Hyena figure, one of eight figures in the Wild Dogs bin figures series. And yes, first off--it isn't a dog, wild or otherwise. It's a hyena--and would have been more appropriate with the Civets and Mongoose series but they made their choice. At least…

Vault Tales 277 Run the Set Safari Ltd South African Animals toob

It's time to look at a set today--toob from Safari Ltd. This one is the South African animals toob, released in 2020 under number 100409. It kind of snuck by me somehow when it first came out, but I was fortunately reminded about it, and able to get it fairly quickly. At least Safari is still generally available, even in Canada. Well, it's an African animals set. It had to have a Lion in it! But it also includes a…

Vault Tales 267 FigureFrenzy Smilodon, Alphadon, Macrauchenia, Hyena

Time to look at a random group of mammal figures. Most are prehistoric, and one is just really old! Old as in, the figure is relatively old (early half of 19th century) as opposed to representing really old animals...that were made more recently (in every case, really recently--like last 10 years recent). Anyway, let's get to them! CollectA Prehistoric Mammals MiniBox Smilodon A very small Smilodon, similar to the larger model but simpler. It's around 1:35 in scale, so close…

Vault Tales 209 FigureFrenzy Deinotherium, Neanderthal, Andrewsarchus, Chasmaporthetes

Oooh! Prehistoric mammal FigureFrenzy today! And quite the range of figures and companies while we're at it! Let's see! Starlux Deinotherium A classic model of a probiscidean that has been interpreted in many ways, the Starlux Deinotherium is heavily based on Asian elephants with a weird lower jaw. The figure is close to 1:100, so mom & child are not far off. Our first figure is the elephant-like Deinotherium Starlux, released in 1973 with the item number FS40044. It was…

Vault Tales 207 FigureFrenzy Hyena, Dodo, Cynognathus, African wild dog, Arsinoitherium

So here's a random assortment of mostly mammals (and adjacent) figures. And one extinct bird, just to mix it up. Most of them are pretty good too! Schleich Spotted hyena (2015 release) The most recent of Schleich's several versions of a Spotted hyena. And probably their best version, although still heavily stylized. The figure is roughly 1:18 depending on it's gender (which is indeterminate) Let's start with a figure that represents one of my favorite animals (mammal edition), a Spotted…

Vault Tales 182 FigureFrenzy Hyena, Spinosaurus, Polar bear, Sea turtles, Sasquatch

So I decided to change things up a little, as mentioned at the end of my last post. It felt like it would be more fun to do more figures, with shorter discussions. Unless, of course, it warrants more discussion. So I'm labelling these FigureFrenzies! Lots of fun stuff (I hope). Let's do this! Panini Spotted Hyena One of my first hyena figures. From a blind bag. And yet somehow I have so many of them! Roughly to scale with…

Vault Tales 3 Bandai Spotted Hyena standing

Who makes it? Bandai, as part of a World Natural Animals capsule series of African animals. Most were paired mother & young, or a family trio. The hyena set is two adults; the pictured one is the standing adult (the other one is sitting in a decidedly not-hyena like pose). They don't give product numbers in the line. UPDATE--right after posting this, I noticed the number 12 in two places on that card. I guess there is an item number...:/…

Vault Tales 2 Schleich Spotted Hyena 2005

Who makes it? Schleich, as part of their African animals back when they were a larger part of my collection, if not my outright main company. This version lightened up the paint job to more brown than orange. It was released using product number 14347. The Schleich hyena, paint job #2 When did it come out? Many years ago…many! Around 2005 or so maybe? Still available? Not easily. It wasn’t around for very long, and it is retired (and replaced)…
