Let's take a quick look at an early ammonite toy, the Imperial Ammonite from Yowies Lost Kingdom Series B (I did a Run-The-Set that earlier). Don't need to say much about it, but it is a neat little figure. It's hard to fathom just how big some of these mollusks could be--as it was labelled as the Imperial Ammonite Tropaeum imperator, the scale is about 1:39, so pretty close to the diver. The first thing that can be noted is…
So here's a fun figure from a line I haven't talked about enough. Another figure from the Bullyland Naturkundemuseum Stuttgart Prehistoric Mammal line. As I've said, this was a wonderful series with a relatively broad (especially for the late 90s) diversity of Cenozoic prehistoric animals (admittedly, all but one were mammals). This figure, the Gomphotherium was especially exciting because it was probably one of the earliest non-mammoth prehistoric elephant figures, barring a couple of hard-to-get Starlux models. And although the…
Well, let's go back to a prehistoric animal, and a 3D-printed one no less. This is another Shapeways model, from creator mmfrankford. The specific model is their take on Diplocaulus, the famous and popular boomerang-head 'amphibian' from the late Palaeozoic. At about 1:10 scale, this Diplocaulus is to scale with Ray. Maybe if they had stuck to these guys in the park, Ray would have kept his arm. Also, Diplocaulus (at maximum size) was larger than I would have imagined!…
It's another figure from one of the Innovative Kids book+game+figures sets, another animal from the Arctic Chill box set (the polar bear was seen here). As I've mentioned before, these are interesting sets (that are of course no longer available) that contained fairly decent books, rudimentary games, and a collection of animal figures that might not have been the very best, but often contained some interesting species. Was the Arctic Chill one of those sets? Kind of. But today's figure…
Haven't posted in a bit...and this one's going to be appropriately short for a small figure. This one is from the classic Schleich 'Minis' series, initiated in 1965 and as a group discontinued in 2005. In particular, this is the basic 'Kuh' or Cow, as in domestic cow, item number 10067. I don't know when it was released, but given the low-ish item number it was likely near the original releases. The series starts at 10001 and ends at 11210--skipping…
Time to look at another small Kaiyodo dinosaur figure. This time, it is from the classic and beloved Dinotales figures. This one is from series 5, after Kaiyodo had split from UHA and moved over to being collected with CC (a drink company...I think). This was the only time Dinotales collaborated with CC. As an aside, it's weird to to consider--these amazing, museum-quality small figures were essentially prizes with the purchase of candy or drinks (this is the big change…
After a longer absence for no particular reason, I'm back with a classic dinosaur species--and let's pretend that I picked it because Jurassic World Dominion is releasing a day from now (or so) and no matter what they do, Tyrannosaurus rex will always be the star dinosaur! Really, though, it had been randomly picked a while ago, I just happened to write this now! Serendipity! Interestingly, this figure is marks a pretty big turn from the many, many T. rex…
Time to look at a small figure from a great little set, a figure from the Play Visions "Civets & Mongooses" set . I looked at a figure from this set once before, the so-called Binturong that is more likely an Asian palm civet. This is another figure that is very nicely made, but clearly stamped with a less informative name (but at least technically 'right'). The figure is marked as a 'Ring-tailed Mongoose', but better referred to as a…
This is the second Kabaya figure I've looked at, so I can skip a little of the preamble. They are a Japanese set of dinosaurs/prehistoric animals that appear to have followed the general concept of Dinotales, with their own spin. For one, the figures are all a different, hollow plastic that feels more resistant. For another, the figures require assembly, but at most is only a few side-to-side pieces. Finally, they sculpts are all brilliantly done (I think they're by…
Quick look* at a nifty shark figure today--the prehistoric shark Hybodus made by Neko Works for their "Shark Attack" series. These are single piece models available in Japan only (I think) as unpainted white resin figures. This mean lots of great detail, and also lots of pointy bits. And they are certainly not toys as they can be fairly fragile. The unpainted Hybodus in its complete form. A few molding bits to clean up I suppose. Also note that central…
I'm going to take a quick look at one of my more recent figures today, and easily one of my hidden favorites--the recent CollectA Elasmosaurus from their standard figures line. It may be from the 'standard' or popular series, but it has the quality of a deluxe to me. The figure was released in summer 2021, so very recent, as number 88922. Some wide shots of the figure. It's pretty long, so it's hard to fit into a picture. But…
Been a bit distracted lately, but catching right back up...once again, with a very random assortment. Very. Broad range of quality, style, and taxonomy. Jurassic World FK mini Allosaurus (Walmart) Revisiting an almost monochrome figure from the Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom minis. This time it's the Allosaurus. A very gaunt, skinny dino. It's about 1:85 scale, so the explorer is pretty close. So we'll start with another mini figure from the Walmart Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom multi-pack (a few others can…
