I posted (and you later commented) here: http://animaltoyforum.com/index.php?topic=2715.msg26092;topicseen#msg26092

and it's been reviewed here: http://animaltoyforum.com/index.php?topic=1897.0

[the second one is entire body length; mine goes to the base of the tail]

Isidro

Hello,
Since various months ago I'm dealing about whit Great White Shark I should choose for my collection.
I originally went with the Safari 2016 one shown in the posts above, and having asked that same question people also recommended it to my over any other GWS in the market. However I'm not fully convinced and finally I discarded it in favour of Schleich.

But, whit Schleich great white shark should I choose for my collection? Here is where the real doubt is!

By one hand, the Schleich 14700 shark, that is absolutely fantastic because it catches the shape of the head, eyes and mouth better than anyone and I absolutely fall in love with its closed mouth that makes it so realistic,
http://toyanimal.mywikis.net/w/images/f/f9/Schleich14700.JPG

By other hand, the Schleich 14809 shark, is also anatomically perfect, and I only disfavour this because of the open mouth but is still not "too widely open" and I can accept it. The reason that make me doubt between this one and the previous better one, is that this one have the Lorenzini ampullae sculpted, and the other not. And this is an important feature for me, as much as the closed mouth. Teeth in this figure are blunt and bad, but maybe I can correct them with paste, that should be easier than trying to make decent-looking Lorenzini ampullae with a pin in the other figure.

So guys what do you think! I must think quickly because the closed mouth figure is retired and maybe soon turns too difficult to get.

Thanks!

Thanks!

I say the new one because my older one broke on my birthday this year due to vending too much in storage. The newer o e also has a more pronounced lateral keel on her tail.

Isidro

Thanks JimoAi! I think it will be my choice, I just love the ampullae detail. A combination of the two figures (closed mouth and Lorenzini ampullae sculpted) would be the perfect GWS in figure form :)

Why not get both to be safe, like me

Gwangi

I prefer the older figure, it's just so unique when compared to other white shark toys. It feels like it properly depicts the animal as it would normally appear, vs. the taxidermy pose of the newer figure. I realize you're concerned about the ampullae of Lorenzini being visable, but I'm not sure they should be visible at this size anyway.

Or just get both, I'll probably get the newer one eventually myself. They're both great.

Cause my collection is strictly synoptic.

Thanks Gwangi, yes they're well visible in close inspection (I've seen the model in toy shops various times), that's why I love the figure (in the TAW images they're hardly visible).
Still undecided. I like the mouth of the old one as much as the ampullae of the new one...

What I'm saying is that I don't know if it's accurate to show the ampullae of Lorenzini on a toy that's that small. I understand why you would like them being there, but if you shrunk down a white shark to that size would you actually be able to see them at all?

Isidro

Ah yes, I understand. In the same way if you expand the figure to a 1:1 size, you could probably insert a tipo of finger into one of the ampullae - a thing that can't be done in a real shark :D

It's the same with many reptile figures that have enlarged scales (like in all western brand anacondas, that I discarded for this and more reasons).

So maybe finally the older figure is my choice, unless there is some more arguing about that. Thanks! :)

Exactly, I mostly collect dinosaurs so this is a common topic of discussion in that particular hobby.

The newer one has better blacktips, a more pronounced lateral keel and better proportion gills

Isidro

For the gills I prefair the old one, at least juzging from the images seen in TAW. In the new one the gills looks like a bit too pronounced.

JimoAi

If you're getting the OG great white, are you naming him Bruce? I went with the newer one simply because it scales and look better.

sbell

Great. Now we have to consider this when figuring out what actual species our mantas are!

What is the rarest chondrichthian figure out there in terms of rarity

It's hard to say. Neko Works made some interesting models for a short while, including a starry smoothhound and a greenland shark. I don't think those species have been otherwise done...and I don't think the models are still available.

I really hope the photo works...

Obviously they require painting. I just haven't. Even have a spare starry so that I can practice.

I'm so very in love with the starry smoothound, what a beautifully dynamic pose!

It was (?) a nice set, wtih some other interesting animals (including my first Stethacanthus and Hybodus models). I missed out on their cookie cutter...but I can't remember any of their others.

Until I figured how to find them online! https://www.hlj.com/search/?q=shark+neko. They are all discontinued (I didn't realize I got them in 2010). Most are portrayed painted, but they come unpainted.
