Are these figures supposed to be like this?

So a few years ago I picked up the Colorata set of coral reef fish. In all the pictures I've seen of them, they have short display tubes, but the ones I have, have these tall display tubes. Is this a defect, or do I have to cut them down manually?

All the Colorata rods I have that came with figures are long, even though the pictures show them shorter.  In the booklet that they come with it says to cut the rods to the desired size.
