Today, Wednesday 4th October, 2023 marks World Animal Day. From the very first micro-organisms to the mighty dinosaurs to the emergence of mammals, our planet Earth has been a major witness and cradle of the evolution and emergence of animals. Ever since the dawn of time, humanity has lived and strived alongside animals. Sadly, in meeting our never-ending needs such as for example; agriculture and the food, textile and leather industries and the global expansion of our species, we are causing great harm and suffering to our animal friends through ills such as deforestation, global warming and animal cruelty.
This is where World Animal Day comes into light. Marked since 1925, this day is used to raise awareness about the constant need for conservation and protection of animals. Through for example breedings in captivity and the work of NGOs, there is a glimpse of hope to save endangered/ vulnerable species and end animal cruelty but it's a constant and tireless fight. Like us, animals are sentient beings with thoughts, feelings and individual personalities. So, they deserve constantly lots of love, welfare and rights, protection, treatment where needed. I believe they are gifts from God to us and it's our duty to protect them. To quote Charles Darwin; "The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man" and Mahatma Gandhi; "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. I hold that the more helpless a creature the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of humankind."
