forgot the bamboo is missing the anal fin too

Saarlooswolfhound

I have really enjoyed these shark analyses too. Very educational, so thank you everyone!

I am not a synoptic collector so I will enjoy a whole school of sharks if they are appealing to me. :D

Ooooooo....I think you are on to something there!!!!!!

Quote from: sphyrna18 on August 19, 2023, 02:59:52 PMI think it's pretty unique that so many of the species of sharks are sculpted as males.  While only Bonnetheads show true sexual dimorphism amongst sharks (other than size), it is still interesting to me that Toymany went the extra step of sculpting claspers.  But not on the Bonnethead, which is good because, if I'm not misremembering something, the Safari Bonnethead is most likely based on a juvenile male, given the shape of the head as well as the size and distribution of the secondary fins (and lack of claspers).  The Toymany gets the shape of the head and distribution of fins correct, it appears, for a mature female.  Unfortunately, it does make it a bit harder to use as a Scoophead Shark, but not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

Did I see claspers on the Bambooshark as well?  No matter, a minor error that is easily overlooked.  And given the price of these sharks, it would be a great figure to repaint possibly as an adult Bambooshark, a White-spotted Bambooshark, or even possibly an Epaulette Shark.  The sky is the limit!

This is a really great looking shark set.  No, in my opinion these don't unseat many of Safari's sharks; however, Safari has struggled slightly with some of the Requiem Sharks over the years (looking at you, Bull Shark!).  Their Blacktip Reef Shark sculpt is nice, but it is nowhere near as realistic as many of their more recent sharks or their Monterey Bay Aquarium figures.  Likewise, their Lemon Shark is a little rough (definitley too square), especially compared to beauties like their Sandtiger Shark!  I would like to see them update some of their shark figures, and I'm sure they will when they've sold sufficient numbers of the current molds to justify it.  In the meantime, it seems Toymany is willing to step up to the plate and take a swing.  So while I don't see any need to replace figures (I'm not into buying just one of a species if I like more than one figure of a species I will have more than one figure of that species), I think those of you that do only collect one figure of a species will have some tough choices going forward haha. :o  :))

Thank you for the info on the Bonnetheads, I did not know they were sexually dimorphic like that!

Yes, I am very tempted to try a very simple repaint of the Brown Banded Bamboo Shark pup to turn it into an Epaulette Shark pup; those pups also have the striping, you'd just need to paint on the "epaulettes" and add some spotting throughout. Anything beyond that is unfortunately out of my wheelhouse!  ;D

And yes, I don't mean any knock against Safari; as a company, I think they still have the widest array of shark figures and some of the best available! The Bigeye Thresher (see my avatar haha), Sandtiger, and Salmon Shark are among my favorites in my shark collection! I just welcome any new shark figures, especially when they may end up doing a better or equally good but different job at depicting species.

I stick to a "one figure for each species" rule as a way of not going overboard and buying way too many figures. Basically, if I already have the species and a new one comes out, even if it is marginally better, I won't buy. Only when a new version is 1000x better than mine (as what happened with Collecta's Basking Shark compared to my prior Safari) will I double up. But since I needed the Longnose Sawshark and it came with some extras... I may have to amend my rule  ;D I think I can justify two Bamboo sharks on my shelf because different life stages, and same thing for the Bonnetheads haha?

Could definitely use it as that! I'm honestly surprised at how many Sicklefin Lemon Shark figures there are, thought all companies would just make N. brevirostris but Ikimon and Recur both have previously made one of N. acutidens. I have the Ikimon, and while it is tiny, it is probably my favorite depiction of either species.

JimoAi

I see you went with the Papo great white over the Schleich too!

Alopias superciliosus

Yeah, I agree that the 2018 Schleich is probably a better figure overall and I will probably eventually pick it up, but I've had the Papo for probably over a decade now and nothing has wowed me enough to pull the trigger. I think the head on the Papo is excellent so it works well on my shelf where that is the only thing obviously seen  :)) I really love the paint scheme on the Toymany one though, may swap it out for a little while

got my set in!

I feel that the blacktip, mako, Great white, thresher, bonnethead and lemon are better than their safari counterparts and the figures exceeded my expectations!

unfortunately the Bamboo is the weakest with the claspers included for a baby and the lack of the anal fin and the best had to be the great white for me.

The saw shark and the Lemon definitely takes the cake for theost unique and the Mako wowed me ESP since it's the best mako I've seen but unfortunately mine has paint scuff on his fin

@bmathison1972 there's alot of replacements here!

Thanks to @bmathison1972 for telling me about this thread.  I originally posted this in another thread, but it belongs here.  Toymany has released a penguin set:

Here is a link to where they are sold: https://www.amazon.co.uk/toymany-Realistic-Figurines-Antarctic-Different/dp/B0CFPL1FKN/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=10QC2WU2EIWKJ&keywords=schleich%2Bpenguin&qid=1696194502&s=kids&sprefix=schleich%2Bpenguin%2Ctoys%2C362&sr=1-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1

I didn't see any species identification for the figures, so I've done my best to identify them below using the image above, if anyone can help with this please do!:
1. Gentoo penguin
2. Baby penguin, not sure if it could only be an emperor penguin baby?
3. Emperor or king penguin?
4. Juvenile, not sure if it could only be a king or emperor penguin juvenile?
5. Adélie penguin
6. Australian little penguin
7. African penguin
8. Emperor or king penguin?
9. One of the crested penguins, I can't differentiate most of them
10. Yellow-eyed penguin
11. Another of the crested penguins
12. Chinstrap penguin

EpicRaptorMan

9. Erect-crested Penguin
11. Macaroni Penguin?

I'm interested in 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11. But I'm not from the UK so it is unavailable to me.

BlueKrono

I'm interested in 1., 5., and 12. I wonder if they'll ever be released outside the UK.
I like turtles.

EpicRaptorMan

Also the Adélie's feet look a bit weird? Maybe because of a cheaper plastic material?

I'd be interested in the yellow-faced and chinstrap if the size is good.
If someone gets the set, please, share photos.

3 Is definitely a king while 8 is an emperor. 4 is a king juvenile, not emperor. At least I know king chicks are brown while emperor chicks are grey.

The shark set some of you have was available in Amazon Spain this week and I bought it. The sawshark will join my collection and probably the bonnethead and thresher will replace my Safari's.

Thanks for the help with the identification!  I spent some more time on it and I believe 11 is indeed a macaroni penguin.

I received the penguin set today.  The figures are excellent, they are just as good as extant animal figures by CollectA and Mojo.  The penguin figures look like what is seen in the image I shared previously with the occasional small dark paint scuff on the white belly which looks like what can be seen on real penguins - it doesn't bother me at all.  I'm very happy with these figures, they are of good quality plastic and the painting and sculpted detail on their dorsal side is very impressive.  The feet of my Adélie penguin are fine, the one in the image I shared has a warped foot for some reason, but again mine doesn't have that problem.  I can't provide photos of the penguin figures right now, sorry.

If one searches for "toymany penguin" on Amazon of their country, I wonder if this set is available to purchase outside of the UK then?  If not, it might be worth contacting the seller and asking them if they can ship to the desired country, this has worked for users on the Dinosaur Toy Forum sometimes in the past.

@SerAndrew, the sizes of the figures are provided in the image I posted :)

Well I went to the Amazon page to ask them if they could ship outside of the UK, but it appears that it is already out of stock.
Too bad because I was really interested in 5,6,9,10,11

sbell

It's too bad that a lot of Toymany figures are still recasts/knockoffs of Safari, CollectA, Colorata, etc
It would be great if they'd retool them into something more uniquely theirs, with a similar level of quality

Sim

I just checked the Amazon page for the penguins set and it says it's in stock.

I'm very impressed by the quality of these figures, I think as long as Toymany continues producing their own figures they are a strong company.

Saarlooswolfhound

It says its unavailable to me also even if I change the country for my account.

I hope they will be in stock for US Amazon too.

And I agree Sim, its a nice brand where their unique sculpts are concerned.
