I'd be happy with Bryde's or fin; I don't have either in standard size :)

Bryde's Complex came to my mind as well. Given the recent discovery of the Rice's whale, it'd be very appropriate.

The first Safari tease this year that really has my interest piqued. Always excited for a new cetacean.  :))

I could maybe see a minke whale being that dark, but it's pretty unusual colouring even then.

Are we *sure* it's not a new orca? Or maybe a common dolphin, false killer whale, or pilot whale?

With the way they're teasing it, it seems like it's unlikely to be a species we've seen in the Sea Life line before like the orca or pilot whale. Of the blackfish, I think false killer whale is the most likely. That would be another species I'd be excited to own. I doubt it will be a dolphin species with ''dolphin'' in the common name because of the whale puns in the teaser. While dolphins are of course whales in a taxonomic sense, it's not the type of thing that people are conscious of enough to justify the explicit whale puns here. This cetacean will either be a non-dolphin or a dolphin species with ''whale'' in the common name.

With this coloration of the rear body, I cannot imagine how they could be any other thing than a minke whale.

I will keep my CollectA one.

Safari wrote this today:  This creature was named after a whaler who mistook it for a different animal. @callmejoe3 - thoughts?

Also: Your guesses for our newest 2022 figurine have been unBALEENably good so far! Only one more day until the reveal!

It's a minke. The origin comes from a German laborer , Meincke, who mistook them for blue or fin whales. Norwegians named the species in mockery of his poor ID skills. I was talking with Darren Naish on Twitter about  the new figure. When shown the photo on their tiktok, I saw it wasn't an orca. It was likely a minke. Safari's account gave me a  ;) for my guess

I'm fine with a new minke, but Safari better make it really good because CollectA's left no room for error. Even with the very expensive garage kits, I *still* think the CollectA minke is arguably the highest-quality cetacean model in my collection. Maybe an Antarctic Minke?

If it is the same minke species as CollectA's, I see no reason to replace it. So, it will be a pass for me.

Same. It's neat, but Safari really would've been better off doing a Bryde's or Fin whale so it wouldn't have to compete. The CollectA figure was the dwarf minke of the southern hemisphere, which is actually a subspecies of the common minke in the North. Antarctic minkes are a seperate species altogether. If it's a northern common minke or Antarctic, I might consider it.

thank you everyone; I have added a pic to the first thread. A lovely model, but I see no reason to replace my CollectA version.

Technically, as was previously mentioned by callmejoe3, Collecta's represents a Dwarf Minke based on the fin markings.

The Safari version is a Northern Minke. While they are (at least currently) considered the same species, they are distinctive in appearance, for what it's worth.

True, but I am not a cetacean specialist. Hunting down subspecies of whales is not a priority, especially with Japanese companies cranking out new species of insects!

Maybe someday, but it's not a 2022 priority.

Well, I don't have the CollectA minke whale and since Safari figures are easier to acquire in the states, I'll definitely be getting this one.  ^-^

Yeah, I am definitely getting it regardless. It looks better than Schleich's retired Minke they outsourced from Maia and Borges. It's probably the best-looking rorqual to come out of the Sea Life line. Definitely better than the blue whale and humpback. Only critique is the mouth looks a bit tacky compared to the rest. Overall, it's nice though.

Nonetheless, if you're a non-cetacean specialist only interest in collecting one minke whale, I'd encourage the CollectA model.

EpicRaptorMan

I held off a long time for CollectA's Minke but I did eventually get it. And I'm glad I did, one of my better cetaceans.

Won't be getting Safari's because of that.
Still holding out on that Salmon shark >_>
