So, I'd like to reserve a figure that seemed unlikely... but I think I have it coming to me...!

It's the Safari Sea Lamprey.

Yeah, I tracked one down. Might not arrive for a while. I'll give more details once I have it. Or unreserve if it goes wrong. But it's looking pretty likely. I know this is kind of ambiguous but I don't know much on timelines. But no, it's not directly from Safari or anything like that.

I scheduled a lot of those a while ago, but I'm trying to avoid Saturdays now!

I found a Safari Ltd. soft shell turtle on eBay. I would like to review it.

I also need to look at my list of reserved reviews, there are some there I want taken off.  :P

you mentioned there were some to take off but I didn't do it at the time, sorry. Please remind me and I'll get on it (unless you want to keep everything there)

It looks like the soft shell turtle I "scored" is probably a knockoff. It has no company markings on the underside. I might still review it but as a knockoff, not the authentic figure by Safari so you can take me off of that one. Not thrilled about it but these things happen. :-\

Done, and sorry to hear that.

I don't think the seller did it intentionally, it's virtually identical to the real thing but still, I hate bootlegs.

bmathison1972

I am not sure we accept blatant knock-offs for Blog review. It was discussed early on but can't remember what, if anything, we decided. @AnimalToyForum - do you recall?

I would understand if they're not allowed. Although there are some on the DTB. In defense of reviewing a bootleg, as a product and toy animal that is currently available to consumers or collectors, I think it's justifiable to review them as long as they are stated as such. Any bootleg review I would write would be as much a cautionary tale as anything else anyway.

yeah personally I am fine either way, and I just checked DTB and saw some (although they were distributed by known companies, even if they 'borrowed' from others...). I was just curious.

And I like your approach in doing it, as a cautionary tale but also giving an inexpensive alternative to an otherwise expensive or hard to get figure. I personally don't collect them either, but it doesn't bother me if someone else does.

Just trying to make lemonade here, since life handed me lemons. It would be a cautionary tale indeed! I would have never questioned its authenticity if it weren't for the lack of brand markings.

IC figures are one of the most popular knocked off figures on places like AliExpress. Interestingly, they often include alternative paint schemes.

I've never gotten one before, so I don't know if they're under- or oversized like, say, Colorata figures often are (I do have a few, often because I want something larger. The giant Sakhalin taimen is great)

bmathison1972

I hate to admit it, but some of the 'Chinese IC knockoffs' are painted much better than the Safari originals. I have seen some of them for sale, sadly, at US institutions like the aquariums in Chicago and here in Salt Lake City.

I'd forgotten about that, but you're right, I've seen that too. It's got to be price driven, but that has to mean there's a supplier wholesaling them. Which feels problematic.

@Shane any thoughts on these safari bootlegs even tho it's sad safari can't really do much?
