@bmathison1972 I only just saw this notification (sorry, I don't sign in here often!), but I'm happy to take a gander.

I honestly can't remember what I tagged you on...

@bmathison1972 it was this:

Yeah, turns out Linnean groups aren't great for actual relationships.

Yup, but there are plenty of holdouts that will gladly argue with ya about it.

Modern systematics is abandoning Linnaean hierarchy for clade-based organization based on proposed evolutionary relationships :). Funny this has come up; I am actually working on a clade-based inventory of my collection based on the format of Adl and colleagues (2019) on the higher taxonomy of eukaryotes. I was going to email it to some of you when completed LOL

I spent about a year working out a cladistics based taxonomy to align with my database (above the family level).

It's harder to remember where things are, but I have a massive spreadsheet to keep track

It's hard to do in a database unless you want lots of columns lol. I use Linnaen categories for my Excel database, but it's more for convenience

I DO have lots of columns, imported from the Excel sheet I prepared it all on.
I can't share it here but it's ridiculous.

I've also made allowances for things like scenery and objects and imaginary/fantasy animals

I know this was getting a little off-topic but I am making headway on the aforementioned document. If anyone has interest in seeing it when I am done, email me, PM me, or reply to this thread. I anticipate having it done within a month (I am currently buried somewhere in the actinopterygiid fish LOL)

@Halichoeres - I would like your take on it
@sbell - curious how it compares to your system
@Avian - this could help with your project (which I have been delinquent in sending you more updates, sorry; this current checklist has preoccupied my time).

A spreadsheet of some kind?

Quote from: bmathison1972 on February 03, 2023, 04:40:39 PMOh, no a word doc LOL
How do you keep something like that organized?

I have spreadsheets and a database!

bmathison1972

So, my collection is an Excel database

The Word doc is simply a taxonomic checklist of species I have using clade-based rather than Linnaean-style hierarchy.

My next review is a horse breed, so I hope our readers like horses!

Oooooo well, you got my curiosity up! Given that you are not (generally) a collector of horse breeds, and you already reviewed a Przewalski's horse, I wonder what it could be!!

I have to admit, now that I have a few horse figures (mostly wild, feral, and ancient breeds), I am having a better appreciation for them. I still doubt I'll collect many more, but I appreciating them more than I thought.

Haha, good! The bolded portion of your quote should give you a hint. The main reason I don't do horse collecting is that there are just too many of them, but I foresee that I'll buy a few that strike my fancy here and there. I particularly like draft horses so I'll no doubt pickup a shire or Clydesdale down the line.

My next review will probably be Valentine's day. Not sure I'll get another ready before then.

I'm hoping for a kissing bug, or maybe pubic lice. Being Valentines Day and all.  >:D

Nope! I did not see that one coming. But, it is in a similar vein as to what I predicted you might cover, and I'm thankful for it!

Haha! Brilliantly inspired! I've shared this on Mastodon with the hashtag #valentinesday so hopefully lots of people will discover it while they search for romantic posts.  :))
