Yeah, turns out Linnean groups aren't great for actual relationships.

Yup, but there are plenty of holdouts that will gladly argue with ya about it.

Modern systematics is abandoning Linnaean hierarchy for clade-based organization based on proposed evolutionary relationships :). Funny this has come up; I am actually working on a clade-based inventory of my collection based on the format of Adl and colleagues (2019) on the higher taxonomy of eukaryotes. I was going to email it to some of you when completed LOL

I spent about a year working out a cladistics based taxonomy to align with my database (above the family level).

It's harder to remember where things are, but I have a massive spreadsheet to keep track

It's hard to do in a database unless you want lots of columns lol. I use Linnaen categories for my Excel database, but it's more for convenience

I DO have lots of columns, imported from the Excel sheet I prepared it all on.
I can't share it here but it's ridiculous.

I've also made allowances for things like scenery and objects and imaginary/fantasy animals

I know this was getting a little off-topic but I am making headway on the aforementioned document. If anyone has interest in seeing it when I am done, email me, PM me, or reply to this thread. I anticipate having it done within a month (I am currently buried somewhere in the actinopterygiid fish LOL)

@Halichoeres - I would like your take on it
@sbell - curious how it compares to your system
@Avian - this could help with your project (which I have been delinquent in sending you more updates, sorry; this current checklist has preoccupied my time).

It's a very large group. I only concern myself to the 'super' ordinal clades (keeping orders together). Which is workable for most groups. I'm sure I could break out the largest crown groups, but I tend to collect those less than the groups further down

yeah for the acinopterygiid fish, I only go to the 'Cohort' level and then to order, not subcohorts, divisions, subdivisions, and series. But then for each order-level taxon, I do families, genus, species.

The only groups that are going to get subfamily-level treatment are scarab beetles, nymphalid butterflies, and bovids :)

thanks to @CodyK2004 for helping me acquire the last of this Holy Grail set

Since this came up for today's daily 'Museum' post, I thought it would be a good time to migrate it over from the ATF;

Good idea!

By the way, since leaving Twitter a few weeks ago I've been sharing the new Animal Toy Blog reviews on Mastodon instead, and will continue to do so. https://sauropods.win/tags/AnimalToyBlog

@callmejoe3 still doesn't have an author's page, @bmathison1972 , and so there is no way to access his personal library of written reviews.
