My newcomers

That poor spotted gar, missing his base...but it's a good figure! Congrats!

Thank you, i dont saw it before. But it is not important :)

Exactly! At least you have a gar!

Oh yes, and i dont know that figurine before and so it wasnt on my wishlist.  But now i am happy with this fish :)

Yeah, the whole set is missing from the TAI! Someday I'll get that fixed with Roger...

I hope to get some more soon :)

Just be aware, there is more than one Toba set, and they repeat some figures!

Why you do that? :o :P ;)  You can not only say they have more but not tell me what. :'( :P ::) :)

And do you know what specie that parrotfish there is?

Rather than keep this up here, I have started a Toba thread here: http://animaltoyforum.com/index.php?topic=2068.0 They haven't had much love here...

That said, the fish you are asking about is a Kitan 'Maori Humphead Wrasse' from Kitan set made for the Toba Aquarium

A couple more of the Little Critterz Figurines. I was familiar with the dragonfly just had not purchased it yet. The swallowtail was a surprise to find; the Little Critterz site does not show one like this, in either its current or retired line!

What is the yellow fish above the mudskipper?

Beetle guy

#1526
So here are two of the newly released Tomy Takara A.R.T.S. beetles. The only new ones for me in this 2017 release (other species included are Dorcus palawanicus, A. dichotomus and L. maculifemoratus).

These two have the same body mold as the dynastes species Takara made the last years. The head/thorax parts are new.
So here are the Dynastes neptunus and Dynastes hercules (subspecies ecuatorianus, I think).

Dynastes neptunus

Dynastes hercules, this is the best version so far I think. I actually find this one of the best D. hercules figurines. See my (re)paint in the forum section on customized figurines. I will also paint the D. neptunus.

Both body/part of thorax parts are the same.

Close-up new D. neptunus model.

The D. neptunus compared to one of the old Tomy Takara D. neptunus versions. Mind the difference in size which is not so big as it apears in the photo.

These wings are not included in the 2017 set but the D. hercules/neptunus body mold has slits for placing them. These wings are from earlier Takara releases.
To beetle or not to beetle.

Recent buggies over the last couple weeks.

First an emperor scorpion by Chap Mei. I had seen CM figures on the Dino Toy Blog and did some snooping to see if they made insects, and found this scorpion on eBay! If you can get past the color, the sculpt is very nice, easily comparable to the Safari LTD Smithsonian figure!

Next a large, vintage cicada by Imperial Toys. Interestingly, the figure does not have the classic 'crown' logo on the underside (or anywhere on it).

The complete B.I.G. Beetles set by Takara Tomy A.R.T.S. for 2017. Beetle Guy already posted the melanic D. hercules and the D. neptunus, but here is the complete series, also including a normal D. hercules, A. dichotoma, D. titanus palawanicus, and L. maculifemoratus. The sculpts and texture are all very very nice but as Beetle Guy mentioned, the paint jobs are very simple and lack the detail of previous renditions.

Lastly, the Coccinella septempunctata model kit by Heller (walk-around just posted).

I was tempted to get the set when I saw it, but it seems to have disappeared already from stores. Don't let the colour fool you, it came with one in more realistic colours and the implication seemed to be this one was glowing under fluorescent light. It was some sort of "X-Files-ey" set.

Ha! I knew when I posted this you would like it and would either have it or consider getting it :). I will put it under blacklight at some point and see if it glows in area. I forgot to mention not only is the detail on par with the Safari Smithsonian figure, it's also an identical size!

When do you plan on doing the walk around? Really would like to see those guys up close!

bmathison1972

The Heller Oryctes nasicornis and Lucanus cervus (note the misspelling, 'Lucanis'). I will do another walkaround of the Oryctes but probably not the Lucanus, since we see this species with some frequency. Both figures are currently being assembled...

Heller have done a wonderful work with these pieces

I didn't do a review of the Heller Lucanus, but here is the final product (when assembling the head, I didn't leave space for the small palps -darn it-so those are missing). The legs don't position the body well, but otherwise I am very happy with the way it turned out.
