On the Dinosaur Toy Forum there's a thread for members' favourite prehistoric animals and I've been thinking it would be interesting to have such a thread here for modern animals!

I'll start with mine!

1. Eurasian magpie  I find it beautiful and it's impressively intelligent!

2. Sulphur-crested cockatoo  I'm impressed by its intelligence and skills!  It's an iconic bird!

3. Rock pigeon  I know some people have bad opinions of them, but they are surprisingly intelligent, capable and successful.  I've had them land on my arm and hand to receive food.  They feel warm and soft!  I enjoy seeing them in the city when I'm out.

4. Carrion crow  I find it majestic.  I've gained the trust of some individuals of this species as they've accepted peanuts from me.

5. American alligator  I find its appearance, biology and toughness appealing.

6. Spectacled caiman  I find it charming.

7. Black swan  I've been charmed by this species ever since I first saw them when I was little.  They are absolutely beautiful, the most beautiful bird I've seen in my opinion.

8. Grey parrot  Again I'm impressed by the intelligence of this species! It looks cool too!

9. Western jackdaw  I've spent a lot of time with this species, individuals of which have accepted peanuts from my hand and also caught peanuts when I threw them, both while on the ground and while flying!  I'm fond of this bird.

10. Wood pigeon  I very much like this species of pigeon too.  I find it very nice.

11. Greater flamingo  I find it awe-inspiring!

12. Perentie  I like its sleek and striking appearance!

13. Nine-banded armadillo  I find it cute and cool at the same time.

14. Komodo dragon  I find it seriously impressive!

15. Rose-ringed parakeet  This is the only wild parrot found here in the UK.  Its sounds are not pleasant but I still like it a lot, it has an impressive appearance.

16. Black-headed gull  I see it quite often and find the sound it makes when there's food around hilarious.

17. Fire salamander  It's so cool!

18. Australian magpie  I find it such an interesting bird, with impressive intelligence!

19. Emerald tree boa  This is my favourite snake species.  I find it stunning!

20. Rainbow lorikeet  I've watched videos of this species and I find this animal charming.

21. Greenland shark  This shark is fascinating!  How old it can live, how it can thrive even while almost blind, how it can catch unusual prey...

22. Mallard  I see this species often here in London and have made friends with some at a pond I regularly visit.  One has even walked on my shoes while I was wearing them!

23. Eurasian goshawk  I've liked this bird ever since learning about it from the Beasts of the Mesozoic colouration inspiration that used it for Dromaeosaurus.

I completely forgot about the Australian magpie!  It's one of my top favourites too, I've added it to the list in my previous post, at number 18.

It's easier to come up with a list of least favorite animals than it is favorites. Ticks, deer flies, chiggers, horse flies, mosquitoes, and sea nettles all conspire to ruin my outdoor fun.

Agreed. Probably because the favorites list is long.

But most of those you listed are annoying but I can deal.

Ticks... gross. We had a couple hitchhikers visit a week ago and it makes my skin crawl

Yeah, ticks top the list. But biting flies will absolutely destroy your day where I live. Mosquitoes are easy enough to keep away with bug spray but the biting flies don't seem to care. I also basically live in a giant marsh, so there's that too.

I'm sure there's a "Creatures that give us the heebie-jeebies" thread somewhere, the content of which will surely overlap with some of our least favourite critters.

sbell

I suppose I forgot to actually list my favorites! It's gonna be broad and miss a lot

Bichirs
Hyenas and related feliforms (civets, mongooses)
Other non-euteleost fish (gars, sturgeon, etc through eels)

Not the sea nettle hate.

In late summer it is virtually impossible to go for a swim here without getting stung by a sea nettle. So if you're going to the bay for a swim you have the biting flies on land chasing you into the water only to then have the sea nettles force you back on land. They're beautiful but I don't like them.

25. Central African rock python  This is one tough animal!  I'm impressed it's even managed to eat a hyena!

26. Japanese giant salamander  It's longevity is remarkable!  I find it an interesting animal.

27. Komodo dragon

30. Electrophorus electricus  This electric eel I also find very appealing due to its form.
