1:40 Scale Animals

Hello! I am a long-time dinosaur collector, and have recently started to branch out into collecting other animals as well. Unfortunately, I got first hooked on collecting with the Carnegie Collection, and since most of my figures are now in the 1:40 scale range, I am now a spoiled-rotten scale freak. This throws a bit of a wrench in my plan, since as most modern animals are rather smaller than dinosaurs, they tend to be represented in much larger scales. I know that there are options, however, and would love for anybody to point me in the right direction. All this being said, I'm no scale nazi, since that would leave me with very little to collect, so I'm really just looking for "close enough". I'm fine with anything in the 1:35-1:50 range. I have a small child to take into consideration, so if you don't mind please mention whether the figure can withstand moderate play, or if it should be kept out of reach.

Safari has been my main resource so far. I have both of their rhinos, the hippo, the African elephant (I've also been meaning to get the Asian), and much of their sea life (including relevant Monterey Bay figures). I've also been using the tapir, jaguar, and caiman from the Rainforest Toob, but have been holding of on buying any others as I am unsure of the size ranges.

I bought Terra's North American & African wildlife sets for the reindeer and zebra & chimp, respectively, as those seem about right by my rough estimate.

Yes, shelf space is an issue with the Mega Sofubi Blue Whale - although, I have to admit, I have a half finished paper model of one that is even a little larger!

My thoughts about 1:40 scale are, well, it's often complicated. Not every time a figure's dimensions really match the scale the company determined (CollectA Deluxe Scelidosaurus comes to mind, that figure is more in the 1:20 range), so I'm always cautious about the toy figure's scale and measure all my figures myself.

The Colorata figures - except for the Pygmy Hippo - have a stand with a clear acrylic rod that is prone to breakage and therefore the figures are probably not suitable for play. Also, many of the abovementioned figures are retired or otherwise hard to get, sorry.

These are all from my collection database, there are of course more but I cannot measure what I don't have. Apparently many major companies have only a few land animals that are around 1:40. But I have not included Japanese Gashapon figures (e.g. Kaiyodo CapsuleQ Museum and the like), yet - the brittle ABS material they are usually made of makes most of them unsuitable for play but on the other hand there may be quite a lot of interesting extant animal figures in this range. If you're interested I can post those that I have, too.

Worth noting that while the rod is fragile, every Colorata figure I have is made of a relatively soft flexible plastic which would be relatively play resistant, but also would not stand on its own.

Depending on the figure, I have lots of Colorata figures that don't need the rods to stand. The most troubling ones are often the bipedal dinosaurs.

There are, of course, a myriad of others that I either don't have, don't have in my database for some reason, or haven't bothered measuring yet. As per playability, only the Furuta and Kaiyodo would pose any kind of an issue, but you would definitely figure that out when you saw them and/or handled them.  The rest can all, thankfully, take a bit of a beating.  I would know, since I routinely drop them, kick them, and do all sorts of other horrible things to them on a routine basis.

The hardest critters to find in 1:40 scale are hoofed mammals; they're almost all either in 1:20 or larger, or they're mini Toob-sized models. I've managed to find a piddling few that are close enough for my tastes, but what I'd really like to find at this point are some bovids and camelids. Anybody know of any in the range of 1:35-1:45?

How large is the Mojo sperm whale? It uses the same mold a toy another company released previously, right? The MBA sperm whale is sadly getting harder to find, so this is maybe my best bet for something in a reasonable size.

Unfortunately, figures the PlayVisions figures are retired; however, they turn up sometimes on eBay and members of STS and this forum seem somewhat able to obtain them.  Also, Kaiyodo Study Room figures are resin, not plastic or vinyl, so they tend to be more fragile.

Does anyone know of a 1:40 Alligator? They're harder to find as they're usually much larger than 1:40.
