To beetle or not to beetle.

Is if just me or does it have an odd head. To me it looks like a black grizzly who is in disguise posing as a black bear.  ???

Nice figure, but it could do with some bamboo.  :)

I have this figure. To be frankly it's my only Japanese company model, when I got this figure on Christmas Day 2016 I had no idea that I was getting it. I had previously looked at Kitan Club models on their company website and somehow my granddad was able to get me it. On a plane from my local airport it takes 13 hours and 45 mins to get to Tokyo.  :)

Typically if I'm going to find a figure looks better in commercial v collector-taken images, I'd expect the former. This bear never impressed me in advertising images.

This pic, which I stumbled upon accidentally, has sold me on (at least on buying to see if I like) the figure when I have fewer than 10 non-Kaiyodo figures in my rather large collection.

Will update when I ultimately receive it.

I am going to start adding images from my daily Museum posts to the taxonomy posts, to generate more activity in these posts

Safari Ltd. 2014 giant panda:

Good idea Blaine. For pandas, I find the two latest Schleich ones way much better than the Safari counterpart, but the latter is enough good.

I don't have any bear figures yet but with only 8 extant species I think it's an entire group I can check off in fairly short order. Interested in suggestions.

I have the papo polar bear

@Gwangi - here is what I chose:

panda: Safari WSW
polar bear: Papo, walking
brown bear: Papo, standing [standing figure by Safari also good]
American black bear: Safari NAW (2017)
Asian black bear: Safari WSW
sloth bear: Schleich
sun bear: Mojo Fun
spectacled bear: none is the 'standard' range (Yowie Group made one, however)

A nice selection, thanks for chiming in. I've had my eye on the Mojo sun bear and Safari Asian black bear for awhile now.

Finally added my first bear to my collection, the Safari moon bear. Reviewed it for the blog too.

Wow @Gwangi - that's your first bear? Several to go! LOL. There are really nice examples (multiple in some cases) of every extant bear in the 'standard' range except for the Andean bear, unfortunately.

Yeah, I'm emotionally constipated about most of the more common bear species figures. I think I've got it narrowed down some. Still fairly new to this hobby, truth be told, and not really in a hurry.

EpicRaptorMan

This is one species I have and have no interest in the SafariLtd version. And the second a better Sun Bear becomes available the Mojo version is also getting axed.

Still wanting a Spectacled Bear. A user on here made a custom one and looked great, but they never followed up with my request to purchase.
Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied on my bear collection. The American Black Bear was another species that took me a long while to decide.

Also for me. None of the classic models convinced me, none captures the essence of the species, many looks like just a brown bear in black disguise (or indeed they are repaints of brown bear figurines), or have an awkward face (CollectA) or not a fine quality sculpt. However the new for 2024 Schleich American black bear looks like quite decent for me and that's the one I will get.

I settled on the old Schleich as it is not bad, but also fits nicely with my Grizzly and Polar bear of the same Schleich era.
The new one is quite nice I admit. Schleich did pretty good for 2024.

I recently received the 2024 Panda set from @Toymany @kenc and have enjoyed examining the figures! I like 5 of the 6, but the walking adult has really impressed me *hard to do as I am not a panda fanatic*. Here are some photos (please note that @bmathison1972 will be doing full blog reviews for them!)

The whole set.

I really love this model.

And I am so thrilled to see that THEIR FRONT PAWS ARE SCULPTED ANATOMICALLY CORRECT! (Their hind paws not so much). A lot of models miss this and sculpt them like other bears'.

The young bears have sculpted feet but not individually painted paw pads.

I really like the one laying on its back.

This one is asleep...

And this one admittedly has a very short neck...

And then we went outside!
