I've seen some of these bottle cap figures without the actual cap and just the base. Can the cap be removed?

Sometimes; depends on the set/series

What about the ones from the Deep Sea Odyssey? Do you know?

I have a couple, let me check later. I am home today recovering from my second shingles vaccine. Don't have the energy to do it now. @sirenia has reviewed a couple on the Blog, maybe he can answer sooner

You mean like the set with the little fangtooth fish?  I'm pretty sure the bases are all firmly attached to the cap, the most you can do is pull the animal off its post or not stick it on there in the first place.

It really depends on what series and how old. Some of them have a separate base that rests on the bottlecap--that can be removed (I think the first two Aquatales were like this, for example the leaping sailfish).

But others, like the Dydo-Miu Deep sea odyssey figures (like the coelacanth and chimaera), the bottle cap is molded as a base--it has the rock shape built in. So while the figure is on a peg, and the peg fits in (so it can be separated), the 'rock formation' is permanent.

Do you have particular ones in mind?

So, yes, the base is molded as part of the bottle cap.

But you say the figures themselves are stuck to a plastic rod & can be removed from that?

I just don't care much for bases and especially not bottle caps. Lol

The fish, rod and bottle cap/base are 3 separate pieces, yes.
In later bottle cap collections, like the Kyoto or Birdtales, the base is often a separate piece as well.

Although if you get them used be warned the fish may have been fused to the rod and the rod to the base more quasi-permanently (you could probably cut it free though if you're very careful)

Sable Antelope

If you're okay with the figure and cap being permanently separated you could probably  use an exact=o knife.

Indeed. I've had ones that were glued together
