Hi, everyone!  :)

When I was a kid at school I remember loving hearing stories read out about animals. I see there's a thread here for Rainbowfish, that was one of my favourites. Percy The Park Keeper, too, if anyone remembers that. I found a new one recently called The Zoo Vet that I've been using with my classes (I'm a primary teacher), and it's really cute so I wanted to share it.

Here's a little extract from it read aloud on the publisher's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfLpapyM6u4

The book itself is here: https://www.twinkl.de/resource/the-zoo-vet-ebook-t-or-1115 and there are a few activities to go along with it. I've used the What Am I? quiz a few times https://www.twinkl.ch/resource/the-zoo-vet-what-am-i-animal-powerpoint-t-or-1114 and the kids enjoy the riddle format, plus it's great  for teaching animal characteristics and getting kids to think about how animals look and act.

For older classes, it could lead quite nicely into a lesson about zoos or an 'at the zoo' vocab lesson https://www.twinkl.at/resource/at-the-zoo-early-wrtiing-activities-t-e-2550522 there are some writing activities attached to the book.

Let me know what you think if you use any of these. The publisher has a few animal themed eBooks to look at. This one is paid, the last time I checked but they have some for free too like this one: https://www.twinkl.hu/resource/t-t-2545726-ronald-the-rhino-story-powerpoint and I think it's really cute. I always try to involve animals in my lessons where I can, especially at story time at the end of the day.

I hope you find these interesting, let me know what you think.

What were your favourite animal stories as a kid?  :)

Hi Conny. Thanks so much for introducing me to this book! I'm a Year 1 teacher and I read it a couple of weeks ago in my class (I also found a Welsh version Milfeddyg y Sŵ which is great as my school is in north Wales). The children loved it! I also found this which helps teach counting to 20 while looking for giraffes, flamingos and tigers etc.

Diolch yn fawr!

PS my favourite books about animals when I was younger were definitely The Animals of Farthing Wood and The Sheep-Pig!

Aww!  You're very welcome :) I loved Animals Of Farthing Wood, too! I remember it being quite dark at times, but it really introduced some important themes like deforestation and the impact humans have on the animal world. I love how animals get the kids engaged and we can use them as characters to address some deeper topics in the classroom.

I was so sad to hear the author of another of my favourites, The Very Hungry Caterpillar recently passed away. I'm planning a lesson soon to introduce the kids to this book and I've found so many brilliant activities we can do. I found this song online (https://www.twinkl.de/resource/t-t-7066-the-very-hungry-caterpillar-song-words) with some lovely words, as well as a few colouring sheets (https://www.twinkl.de/resource/t-t-1229-colouring-sheets-to-support-teaching-on-the-very-hungry-caterpillar). I'm actually Swiss German and I'm trying to teach my two little ones some of my mother language, so I was nicely surprised to find a German version of some activities: https://www.twinkl.de/resource/de-t-t-18077-die-kleine-raupe-nimmersatt-display-materialien-fur-die-klassenraumgestaltung

I totally get you on the languages front, it's so nice to find something has been adapted across more than just English!

Thanks for the counting to 20 activity, too! It's so cute that we get to use animals and insects in the classroom as a way of teaching. I can't wait to start talking all about the rainforest with my class. That was something I loved learning as a child!

Have a lovely day!
