I agree, the colors are realistic and also has a nice looking moveable jaw which is nice.
It's definetly better looking than the Schleich version.

brontodocus

Yes, I think I'll get me the Alligator and Asian Elephant, too. :)

I was on Mojo's website today and noticed that they updated their sea life section with some deluxe figures that look very much like the old schleich 1:32 scale models.  That grey whale looks just like Schleich's, but I'm not sure about the others.  Anyone want to verify?

It is possible that they have licensed the use of the Maia & Borges whale figures. Which I believe Schleich also did (and which explains the brief period of figures that were were stamped as made in Portugal)

Yay, now I don't have to pay $150 for the old Schleich Humpback whale!

brontodocus

This is funny because Papo also rereleased Maia & Borges sculpts that were previously part of Schleich's "Seetiere 1:32" line. But, yes, I recognise quite a few of them here, too.

They look very nice pieces! I was just looking for a good Grey Whale an choosing a Humpback. Anyone knows how big are those two?

They are probably as big as the Schleich ones. Also notice it says "Deluxe Humpback Whale" probably means that it is bigger than the previous Humpback by Mojo.

Rossano

Thanks Cetacean fan, but I don't know the measures of Schelich's models! I would appreciate indications is cms!

CetaceanFan

I got you covered Rossano!
Measurements for:
Humpback whale: 36 cm
Grey whale: 31 cm

I don't have the models, but I used EBay and ToyDreamer for the measurements.

Rossano

wow! this is what yopu call a great costumer service - without being a customer!  ;D ;D ;D

thanks a lot CetaceanFan, really appreciated - but these are huge! I have Collecta's Bowhead Whale and Schleich's Blue Whale and they are smaller than these two ones, while the respective real animals are bigger.

This is a minus, but maybe not a defintive one, since the alternative is a the very nice Humpback from Mojo that is a bit too small, and Safari's Grey Whale, which is even bigger and reallz not as much realistic and detailed.

So the question is: is there a Blue Whale and a Bowhead Whale bigger than the ones of Schelich's and Collecta's who are worth changing the ones I have?

Rossano

While you are here, I find online the following measures for these Maia and Borges figures:

Minke Whale: 24 cm
Whale Shark: 22 cm
Northern Right Whale: 15 cm
Blue Whale: 15 cm

I ask you a check since they say that the same Humpback you say is 36 cm for them is 15 cm (that sure cannot be) so I think my source is not liable.

CetaceanFan

I'm sorry I was away from the forum for a bit, but Maia and Borges original figures are smaller than the bigger Schleich ones, I'm pretty sure at least. But I can't be sure because I don't have any Maia and Borges figures.

CetaceanFan

Also for your question about the Blue whale and Bowhead Whale.
There is not a bigger Bowhead whale figure (at least that I know of) than the Collecta one. Although there is a Safari ltd Bowhead Whale but it's the same exact size.
On to the Blue whale. Yes there are some bigger Blue whale models.
Larami Blue Whale (but this one isn't very worth mentioning because it's impossible to find anywhere)
Size: 34.5 cm
Kaiyodo Mega Sofubi Advance Blue Whale (made out of hollow plastic and is very, VERY huge)
Size: 78.5 cm Scale: 1:40 (box states 1:35)

It's usually better to rely on our own measurements than those provided by shops or manufacturers. My measurements of the Schleich Seetiere 1:32 figures made by Maia & Borges (of which we assume are the same sculpts as the released ones by Mojö Fun and/or Papo):
Grey Whale (Schleich 16082): 283 mm;
Minke Whale (Schleich 16087): 233 mm;
Sperm Whale (Schleich 16084): 324 mm;
Humpback Whale (Schleich 16083): 317 mm (Mojö's Humpback Whale 387119 is an original release and shorter, 235 mm);
Northern Right Whale (Schleich 14558): 196 mm - not to be confused with Maia & Borges Right Whale: 140 mm;
Whale Shark (Schleich 16076, I think that's the one being rereleased, not the slightly larger and newer No. 16089) 251 mm;
A note on my measurements: These were taken to calculate the figure's scale and were done corresponding with the real animal's standard measurements. So for whales I measured from anteriormost tip of head to notch in the fluke (measuring including the lobes of the fluke would have yielded a slightly greater length). In cases of figures with more curved poses the length was estimated how it would have been when the animal was completely straight so slight errors are alsways possible. Sharks were measured for Total Length (=TL), i.e. following and including the tail fin's dorsal lobe.

Edit: accidentally deleted length of Whale Shark.

Thank you for correcting me brontodocus! Because I can't be sure whether the measurements are correct from my sources, and also I don't have any of those figures ( although I am planning to buy some).
