Forum business / The Great Photobucket Purge
« on: July 07, 2017, 06:01:39 PM »
Photobucket have disabled unlimited third party hosting and are now charging a fee (or a ransom).

Firstly, this means Photobucket is no longer a viable image host, don't continue to use it.
Secondly, it means the majority of existing Photobucket images on the forum are now broken. With so many users posting over so many years, this is swathes of images.

The solution?

It will be a huge undertaking but by working together systematically I'm confident we can rid the entire forum of broken Photobucket links. Therefore, I'm suggesting we team up to undertake The Great Photobucket Purge.

I suggest this to consist of two initiatives.

The first is a call for all members who have posted using Photobucket to transfer their images to a new host. There is a discussion about alternative hosts in the Posting Images thread on the dinotoyforum: (is there also one on ATF?) This involves risks (who knows which hosts will become the next photobucket?), but *anything* is better than Photobucket at this stage. After changing hosts, I request all users go into their old posts and replace their image links. There is no obligation to do this, of course - I realise the difficulties involved. However, I want to give people the opportunity to replace their old links prior to initiative two...

Initiative two will see myself (and any moderators willing to assist) go through the forum, thread by thread, post by post, to delete every photobucket link ever posted. I'd rather have blank posts than residual Photobucket spam. It might take months, but if we work as a team, little by little, we will get there.

Before I implement initiative two, I think it is important to give users several weeks to replace their images with the understanding that any remaining photobucket links will be removed by staff in due course. Every link a user changes will be a link a moderator doesn't have to delete, so I encourage users to take matters into their own hands to help out.

I also want to open this up for discussion before I implement initiative two. I'm aware that there are some photobucket-hosted images that still seem to appear on the forum. I'm not sure if this is because the users have paid the ransom, or if they haven't exceeded the number of third party images required to prompt the ransom message. My feeling now is that all Photobucket images should be purged, no matter what. Thoughts?

Animal toys (general) / Animals on the Dinotoyblog Youtube channel
« on: March 09, 2017, 01:59:24 PM »
A thread for me to share animal-themed videos on the Dinotoyblog Youtube channel. There probably won't be many of videos dedicated to animals, so it isn't worth creating a separate channel.

In this one I unbox some of the PNSO's 'Family Zoo' animals:

Forum business / New title banner (2017)
« on: December 22, 2016, 02:29:59 PM »
Thanks to Blaine for input into the new banner, which we worked on together. We think it is a nice selection.

Note that I've shrunk the title to just 'Animal Toy Forum'.

Animals / Animals with fingernails/toenails
« on: November 22, 2016, 10:17:45 PM »
I'm curious. Outside of primates are there any animals that have fingernails or toenails? I realise many animals have unguals with a keratin sheath, but I'm thinking more along the lines of animals that lack unguals but still have a keratin covering, like we do. Maybe primates are unique in this regards?

Animal toys (general) / Sei whale recommendation
« on: February 25, 2016, 08:28:09 AM »
Can anyone recommend any accurate sei whale figures? If not, how about a similar species that could be easily modified?

Animals / Humpback whale flippers
« on: February 14, 2016, 01:27:10 AM »
Does anyone know what humpback whales use their large flippers for? Presumably humpback whales generate thrust mostly using their tails like other whales, or do they use their limbs to generate thrust as well? Maybe their diet/behaviour is different to short-flippered baleen whales?

General / Happy New Year 2016
« on: January 03, 2016, 06:54:56 PM »
Happy New Year to everyone! Last year was very busy for me so I wasn't able to spend as much time on the ATF (or DTF) as I would've liked. 2016 is shaping up to be equally busy but I'll make sure I pop into the forum every now and again! Have a good year. 8)

Before we set up the poll (in this thread, later), I'll list all the figures. Let me know if I've missed any.

New for 2015 / Poll - best animal figures of 2015
« on: October 10, 2015, 12:43:23 PM »
Last year it was quite an undertaking for Brontodocus and myself to set up all the polls to vote for the best figures of 2014. Even so, it would be a shame not to do the same for 2015 figures. Brontodocus, are you up for this again? Would anybody else be willing to help out?

Forum business / New title banner (2015)
« on: January 04, 2015, 03:01:40 PM »
I've updated the forum banner with a more simplistic bold approach featuring just two new for 2015 figures. This matches the new style of the Dinotoyblog and forum. I've also dropped the 'The', so we are now the 'Animal Toy Forum' instead of 'The Animal Toy Forum'. I can change the two figures every couple of months - suggestions are welcome!

What do you think?

Animals / What are your favourite fictional animals?
« on: November 28, 2014, 04:16:57 PM »
What are your favourite made up animals!? 'Intelligent' humanoid aliens are not allowed, otherwise, it's all fair game - aliens, monsters, fantasy creatures. Here are my top 3.

1. My favourite is the Sarlacc from Star Wars (the original version without the Little Shop of Horrors head).

It is just so perfectly adapted for its environment. And so different from your usual movie monster fare. People have suggested it might have some symbolic meaning. I've no idea what they mean.  ;)

2. The warrior xenomorphs from Aliens.

That Geiger design is iconic and unforgettable. Again, the adaptations win it for me - acidic blood. Genius. They are almost disqualified from contention but I think they can still be regarded as animals.

3. The thing, from The Thing.

What exactly is it, I don't know, but that's the point. A mass of replicating cells I suppose. Maybe it is a stretch to call it an animal, but it is a creepy freaky creature, and it could be standing right next to you.

That's my top 3, what are yours? I'm obviously a science fiction fan, all of my creatures have evolutionary innovations, and that's part of my reason for picking them. But other members may take this discussion in a completely different direction.

It has been a while since I posted any walk-arounds so sorry about that!

Animals / Foramina on the tail bones of whales
« on: November 22, 2014, 12:35:24 PM »
Does anybody know why the openings (nutrient foramina) on the lower surface of cetacean tail bones are so pronounced - the are presumably channels for the supply of blood and/or nerves but does anyone have any details? I'd appreciate if anyone can point me to any articles/papers discussing the function of such nutrient foramina in vertebrae in general, or in whale vertebrae in particular. Here's a picture showing the nutrient foramina in a sperm whale:
