Animal Collection 1/1 Waxy Monkey Tree Frog & Breviceps adspersus (SO-TA)

So-Ta, a Japanese toy company, released this set of frogs this summer (2022). There are actually two sets. These sets were released as a gashapon set (plastic eggs in vending machines) and as a boxed set. The sets both contained the same two species but in different colour schemes. The box set has the designers initial colour scheme with the mint coloured Waxy monkey tree frog and the duller painted B. adspersus. The gashapon set has more vivid colours. A green Waxy monkey frog and a B. adspersus with orange yellow spots. Both sets contain four frogs, two fully painted specimens and two glow-in-the-dark versions with only the eyes, and in the case of B. adspersus the mouth, painted.

The species are Phyllomedusa sauvagii, a species of frog in the family Phyllomedusidae. It is native to South America, occuring in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil, and Brevicpes adspersus, also known as common rain frog, bushveld rain frog, and many other vernacular names. It is a species in the family Brevicipitidae found in Southern Africa, Angola, Congo, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Eswatini, and Mozambique.

The sculpting is superb, the paint is great (in both versions) but better on the waxy monkey frog than in the B. adspersus. Marvelous details. I have loosely applied the legs. When appliying firmly the seams are barely noticeable. The scale is 1:1. So they are amongst the Ikimon/Kitan frogs in being very realistic in sculpture, colour and size. Needles to say that if you are a amphibian or frog figurine collector, these make a perfect addition to your collection.
